1977 – 1981

Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Harvard University, establishing the rigorous analytical foundation that would define four decades of distinguished public service, economic analysis, and executive leadership across government, law, and business.

1981 – 1983

Responsible for $20 million budget. Determined the allocation of company chemical requirements among competing suppliers, negotiated contracts, developed price and supply forecasts, and managed a staff of 3 that carried out the allocation of an additional $70 million of contracted business.

1983 – 1987

Earned a Master of Business Administration from UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management and a Juris Doctor from UCLA School of Law — a rare dual degree that positioned him uniquely at the intersection of economic analysis, corporate law, and public policy.

1985

Business Fellowship in Japan recipient, sponsored jointly by the Japan Society of New York and the International House of Japan. Responsible for preparing analysis and forecast of Western European broadcast equipment market. Assisted Vice President in preparing presentation for overseas markets.

1987 – 1990

Admitted to California Bar. Responsible for the preparation of documents and legal opinions relating to public financing of healthcare facilities and other municipal and special district needs. Provided legal advice regarding political and legislative matters for various corporate clients.

1993 – 1997

Served as Administrator of the Agricultural Marketing Service, overseeing a $1 billion agency responsible for setting federal quality and grade standards for U.S. agricultural commodities. Managed over 2,500 employees and led significant reform initiatives in agricultural marketing and food labeling policy.

1997 – 1999

Led the Foreign Agricultural Service as Administrator, directing U.S. international food and agricultural trade programs across more than 90 countries worldwide. Represented the United States at the World Trade Organization and negotiated market-access agreements that expanded American agricultural exports.

1999 – 2003

Appointed by Governor Gray Davis to serve as Secretary of California's Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency — making history as the first Asian Pacific American to hold a cabinet-level position in California. Oversaw a portfolio of economic development, international trade, and technology programs for the nation's largest state economy.

1993 – Present

One of the country's most experienced expert witnesses in agricultural economics and international trade, having testified before the World Trade Organization, U.S. Congress, California State Legislature, and federal, state, and local courts over 100 times. Provides authoritative analysis in complex trade disputes, regulatory proceedings, and high-stakes policy hearings.

2004 – 2007

Provided economic analysis, expert testimony, and strategic consulting to major corporations, law firms, and government agencies at a leading international economics and litigation consulting firm. Specialized in agricultural economics, international trade, and commercial damages in high-stakes litigation matters.

2007 – 2010

Served as Director in the global consulting firm's economics and policy advisory practice, advising corporate, legal, and government clients on complex regulatory, economic, and policy challenges. Led engagements spanning food and agriculture, international trade, and economic impact analysis.

2010 – Present

Founded The Hatamiya Group to provide objective, independent, and rigorous economic analysis for corporate, legal, government, and non-profit leaders navigating complex regulatory, trade, and policy environments. Built a nationally recognized advisory practice serving clients across economics, agriculture, international trade, government affairs, and organizational development.

2021 – Present

The Vine Institute is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation created to support innovators and entrepreneurs working in agriculture, food systems, and related technology.

2024 – Present

The Yuba Applied Research Center is a catalyst for economic growth and improved quality of life for Yuba County. As a trusted research partner connecting government, academia, and business, the YARC is a national, regional and local hub for applied research that directly benefits Yuba County residents as an economic driver and cultivator of a more vibrant, engaged, thriving, prosperous community.

2024 – Present

The Yuba-Sutter Freebirds are a professional independent minor league baseball team based in Marysville, California. They play in the MLB partner Pioneer League which consists of teams in California, Utah, Idaho, and Montana.
